Attached is
a statement called a "Network of Concern" It is a statement
of concern signed by people from different organisations throughout the
London Borough of Enfield and addressing our disquiet over a possible
war with Iraq. We are planning to develop this "Network of Concern"
into a Borough wide alliance and encourage as many organisations and different
faiths to sign up to it as possible.
Should
the situation with Iraq deteriorate or should hostilities break out
then we will request a meeting with our three MPs so that their position
can be made clear and our concerns expressed fully. We hope that you
will feel able to sign up to this "Network of Concern" and
to pass it on to other organisations as well so that they can also take
part.
It is very
important that our MPs understand and reflect local opinion and disquiet
over what is happening and this is one way that organisations across
our Borough can help to make a difference.
Please
contact
us if you wish to add the name of yourself together with your organisation
to this Network of Concern.
Network
of Concern Statement
We are
deeply concerned over a possible war with Iraq and believe that our
elected representatives should keep us fully informed about the situation.
There is great disquiet within the UK at the moment over War and a feeling
that the UK may take part in hostilities at the request of The United
States of America whether United Nations approval has been sought or
not. We believe firmly that all action should take place through the
United Nations and no country should engage in unilateral or multilateral
action.
It is certainly
our belief that no action should even be considered until there has
been
- receipt
of a full and considered report from the UN inspectors by the
Security Council
- an opportunity
given to the House of Commons to vote on the question of peace or
war arising from the report
- a new
Security Council resolution authorizing military action
We are
concerned that hostile action may be taken without these conditions
being met and we would be deeply concerned if that was the case. No
war of this kind, with UK involvement, can be justified if there is
not both international agreement and support from the electorate within
the UK. To go to war when the nation is deeply divided would at the
least be very foolish and at the most disruptive of community relations
and civil society.
Consequently
should hostilities break out with Iraq, we would request an immediate
meeting with our three elected representatives so that the situation
can be discussed fully and local views made clear.
We are
developing a "network of concern" over possible war so that,
at a local level, any meeting with our representatives will be widely
reflective of local opinion. We have begun this network of concern and
hope as many voluntary organizations of all kinds will sign up to it
in order to reflect the widely felt disquiet that exists at this present
time.
