The Bridgwater Town Web

There are seventeen towns worldwide named Bridgewater but only one Bridgwater.

Listed in the Doomesday Book as the small settlement of Brugie, there has been much debate over the origins of the towns name. A favorite, being from Walter's Bridge after the holder of the manor one Walter Douai, can be discounted because he almost certainly did not build a bridge across the River Parrett.

More recently it has been suggested the name derives from the Old English for a gang plank placed from ship to shore - brycg - or even from the Norse term for a quay or jetty- bryggia, but even this has been disputed.

Whatever the origins of its name, Bridgwater can boast a fascinating history well documented from its beginnings in around 800AD through to the present day.
