My West Country connections began when I was born in Warminster in 1930. However soon afterwards I was moved away to Kent and it was not until 1943 that I returned to the West. Our School, the grandly named LCC School of Engineering and Navigation, had been moved from its vulnerable place alongside the Millwall Dock in London in the early 1940's. Its new establishment was in Bridgwater where I joined in 1944 for my pre-sea training. We moved between the local 'Tech' and Dr. Morgan's School on a daily basis and had a very pleasant time in our new surroundings. I especially enjoyed the comings and goings of shipping in the Parrett, believing that the small ships we saw were deep-sea liners! I remember seeing the IRENE on several occasions loading tiles or discharging coal like that converted tug - whose name escapes me. |
